About the Hungerford Recreational Area

 

Part of the Manistee – Huron National Forest, the Hungerford Recreational Area is a multi-use area offering over 20 miles of premier horse trails over gently rolling hills.

 

Forty eight primitive campsites with fire pits are designed for horse trailer usage include 8 pull through sites. Bathrooms and water for horses are provided in the camp ground. Camping is first-come, first served. The horse trails are accessible from the camp ground.

 

A thirty acre lake with boat launch offers fishing and boating opportunities. Horses are not permitted at the lake.

 

Vehicle Passes are needed for all vehicles entering the area, whether camping or not. Cost is $3 per day, $5 per week or $20 per year. Permits are available from local businesses or the Forest Service office. The vehicle pass covers both camping and day use.

Directions to Hungerford: Located in Newaygo County, the recreational area is  west of Big Rapids, Mi.  From U.S. 131, use exit 139, (Big Rapids exit) turn left / west off the exit ramp. The local name for the road is 15 Mile.  Go 8.5 miles to the Norwich Town Hall and turn north on Cypress Avenue. Go ½ mile to the cemetery. Turn east on Hungerford Lake Road and go ½ mile to Forest Rd # 5134.  Turn north on this two track, gravel road and go ¾ mile to the campground. Go another ¼ mile to reach the day area.
